The Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, has been the national emblem of the United States since 1782. Bald eagle populations began declining in the 1800s, and by 1963, only 417 nesting pairs were in the Lower 48 states. However, following the ban of DDT pesticide in 1972 and enactment of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, the population has recovered. By 2007, there were thought to be 10,000 nesting pairs in the Lower 48 states. Bald eagles have also been sighted at Greens WetBank.
